What Is Mysimba?

Mysimba is an effective supplement for weight loss. The treatment – which is a combination of naltrexone and bupropion – comes in tablet form and is only suitable for adults classed as obese or overweight.

Combined with regular exercise and a careful diet, Mysimba can help to address unwanted weight gain.

What Is Mysimba Used For?

Mysimba is an approved supplement for weight loss. It can help you to lose weight when combined with an active, healthy lifestyle and a calorie-controlled diet. The treatment is suitable for those who are overweight or obese. To be classed as overweight an adult must have a body mass index (BMI) of at least 27kg/m2.

To be classed as obese, an adult must have a BMI of at least 30kg/m2. People with a BMI under 30kg/m2 will usually only be a candidate for the drug if they are at risk of weight-related diseases and complications, such as diabetes and hypertension (high blood pressure).

The reasons you are gaining weight are a factor in your suitability for Mysimba. If your weight gain is related to stress-related eating, Mysimba may not be as effective or might be combined with other therapies.

How Does Mysimba Work?

The two active ingredients in Mysimba, naltrexone and bupropion, interact with the nervous system when they are combined. This interaction suppresses the appetite, affecting how you feel when you eat food. Mysimba can also increase the energy you expend during exercise, allowing you to burn more calories. By making you feel less hungry and allowing you to burn more calories, Mysimba can be effective in reducing food cravings and helping you to lose weight.

Mysimba and Alcohol

Alcohol consumption should be avoided while taking Mysimba. If you usually drink a lot of alcohol and have recently stopped, or are planning to stop, you shouldn’t take Mysimba. Consult with your doctor first before taking the supplement.

Mysimba vs Saxenda

Saxenda is another prescription-only weight loss treatment that is used for adults with obesity (BMI of at least 30kg/m2), or who are overweight (BMI of at least 27kg/m2) and have weight-related medical conditions. Unlike Mysimba, which is only suitable for adults, Saxenda can be given to obese children between 12 and 17 years old to help them with weight loss and maintain healthier body weight. Among the other differences between Saxenda and Mysimba are their active ingredients and form.

So how does Saxenda work? Saxenda contains the active ingredient liraglutide, an incretin mimetic that works by assisting the pancreas in releasing the right volume of insulin when your blood sugar levels are high. Liraglutide also reduces the production of glucagon, which causes the liver to produce more sugar, making food pass more slowly through the stomach and controlling appetite. Saxenda is an injectable medicine, with a starting dose of 0.6mg and a full dose of 3.0mg.

Like Mysimba, Saxenda is considered to be an effective weight loss treatment that works best when combined with a calorie-controlled diet and healthy lifestyle.

Mysimba vs Orlistat

Orlistat, which is also sold under the branded name Alli, is another weight loss treatment that is used for people who are overweight or obese. It is taken in capsule form and works by reducing the amount of dietary fat that the intestines absorb. Orlistat stops lipase – an enzyme in the digestive tract that breaks down dietary fat for energy and storage – from working. When orlistat is taken with a meal, around a quarter of the fat from your food won’t be broken down, and is passed out of the body via bowel movements.

Unlike Mysimba, orlistat is available over the counter, but this depends on the dosage. While 60 mg capsules are available at online and high street pharmacies without a prescription – provided you are over 18 years old, are committed to a low-calorie diet, and have a BMI of at least 28g/m2 - 120 mg orlistat capsules are prescription-only, meaning your suitability must be assessed by a doctor. Prescriptions are only given to people with a BMI of at least 28kg/m2 (overweight) and a supporting medical condition or a BMI of at least 30kg/m2 (obese).

If you are taking Mysimba, you shouldn’t take any other weight loss pills at the same time without talking to your doctor first. If you would like to learn more about how to effectively lose weight, we suggest reading our article on the successful treatments for obesity.

Mysimba Reviews

Users of Mysimba have commented that they experienced an immediate drop in their appetite, which curbed their hunger and resulted in them eating less throughout the day. Others noticed strong side effects initially, but these improved as time went on. Reviewers online have highlighted that they stopped craving snacks and drank less alcohol after taking the Mysimba.

One reviewer noted that they initially felt sleepy and a little nauseous when they first started taking Mysimba, but started to really see the benefits almost instantly. In fact, they dropped around 86 pounds of fat and gained muscle.

Another review stated that from the very first time they took Mysimba it stopped their craving for snacks such as chocolate which they had struggled with in the past. Many have stated how much weight they have lost since Mysimba which shows how effective the medication is especially since the results completely outweigh the minor side effects.

Can You Buy Mysimba Over the Counter?

Mysimba is not available over the counter in the UK. You will need a prescription to buy Mysimba. Before you are issued a prescription for Mysimba, a doctor will need to assess your suitability for the treatment. This might include checking your BMI and evaluating any weight-related diseases you may have or be at risk of.

How to Take Mysimba

Mysimba tablets should be swallowed whole with water and can be taken with, or after food. Never chew, crush or split Mysimba tablets – this can alter the release of the active ingredients into the body.

Follow your doctor’s advice on Mysimba dosage. Your dose will typically be increased over a period of four weeks, by which time you will reach your ‘maintenance dose’. Mysimba dosage is usually increased as follows:

  • Week 1 – one tablet taken in the morning
  • Week 2 – one tablet taken in the morning, and one tablet taken in the evening
  • Week 3 – two tablets taken in the morning, and one tablet taken in the evening
  • Week 4 – two tablets taken in the morning, and two tablets taken in the evening

Once you reach Week 4, you will continue with the Week 4 dosage – this is known as the ‘maintenance dose’; the maximum recommended Mysimba dose. You should always follow your doctor’s instructions for taking Mysimba.

How Long Does Mysimba Take To Work?

If you have not lost at least 5% of your body weight at 16 weeks, your doctor will consider if you should stop taking Mysimba. Note that you can achieve the best results when combining Mysimba with a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet.

Guidance from Orexigen Therapeutics, the company which manufactures Mysimba, advises that after eight weeks of treatment, improvements can be seen. Research conducted with over 4,500 overweight or obese patients shows that Mysimba has a significant effect on weight loss, compared to patients who were given a placebo.
