- The optimum time to take orlistat is during your meal or an hour post-meal
- One Xenical 120mg capsule should be taken three times a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) with a glass of water
- Avoid heavy meals rich in fat as this may increase your chance of side effects

- Not only does a low-fat diet help to lose weight, but many side effects significantly reduce when monitoring the fat and oil content of your meals

Who can take Xenical?
Xenical is suitable for most obese adults. If you have any of the following conditions, speak to your doctor before trying this medication:
- A history of allergies to any medication. This is because Xenical may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause an allergic reaction
- A history of eating disorders, including bulimia and anorexia nervosa
- Chronic malabsorption syndrome
- Cholestasis
- Seizures
- Underactive thyroid
- HIV
- Kidney problems, including kidney stones
- Diabetes - people with diabetes do take this medication but you will need more monitoring by your doctor
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding and Orlistat
You should not use Xenical if you are pregnant or trying to conceive. This is because weight loss whilst pregnant may harm your baby. If you are trying to conceive, consider losing weight first. If you become pregnant whilst taking Xenical 120mg capsules, speak to your doctor for advice.

Drug interactions
Orlistat can interact with some drugs. Therefore, it’s advisable to contact a doctor or pharmacist before taking Xenical 120mg capsules if you take any other medication, including supplements and herbal medicines.
You should take particular care if you take any of the following drugs, as they are known to react with Orlistat. If you take any of these, consult your doctor about other medication for weight loss.
- HIV medications
- Warfarin, which is a blood thinner
- Seizure medication - Orlistat may make it less effective. You will need to speak to your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking this medication with Orlistat
Side Effects
Xenical Side Effects
There are not many side effects associated with Xenical capsules but your body can experience a change in bowel movements. As 30% of fat isn't being absorbed, yet passed through your system, it comes out in stools and flatulence as an oily discharge.
This highlights the importance of altering your diet to only contain low-fat/ low-oil foods as then, this side effect is significantly reduced. If you eat high calorie, greasy or oily meals whilst taking orlistat, this can result in uncontrollable bowel movements.
Other common side effects include:
- Increased bowel movements
- Fatty stool
- Intestinal gas
- Less bowel control
Side effects are typically uncommon or milder in people who eat less fat. If these side effects feel severe or if your body does not feel like it is getting used to them, speak to your doctor.
Rare side effects include:
- Nausea/ vomiting
- Dark urine
- Yellowing of the skin and eyes
- Pain in the stomach and abdominal area -these could all indicate liver disease.
- Pain whilst urinating
- Back pain
- Bloody or pink urine - these could all indicate kidney stone
If you experience any of these side effects, stop taking Orlistat and speak to your doctor immediately. If your symptoms are severe and you can't get hold of your doctor, go to A&E or seek medical attention immediately.
Allergic reactions to Orlistat are infrequent, but they are possible nonetheless. If you experience any of these allergic reaction symptoms, call 999 or go to A&E. Make sure that you take the leaflet from your medication with you to A&E to help the medical professionals treat you.
- A blistered, red, or swollen rash anywhere on the body
- Itching and swelling, particularly if it is on your face
- Difficulty breathing
- Bad dizziness
