What Is Condyline 0.5% Solution?

Condyline is a topical treatment for genital warts that is prescribed to adults only. In most cases, Condyline improves genital warts within just three days, making it one of the most popular and effective treatments available.

The treatment comes in a 0.5% solution that is a transparent liquid and is applied directly to genital warts. Condyline contains the active ingredient podophyllotoxin, a medicine derived from the podophyllum plant.

What Is Condyline Used For?

Condyline 0.5% solution is used to treat genital warts caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI), affecting millions of people across the world annually. The virus, which is more common in women than men, is usually transmitted by vaginal or anal sex. However, it can also be spread through non-penetrative contact such as touching or rubbing against the genitals of someone who had HPV.

Genital warts develop around the penis, vagina or anus. They can also grow in the mouth or throat after oral sex with an infected person. They appear as small growths that are brown, flesh-coloured or pink, and can cause itching, discomfort, and sometimes bleeding. Clusters of genital warts can have a cauliflower shape. Warts can sometimes be hard to see, due to their small size and flat shape. In other cases – such as in people with a suppressed immune system - genital warts can multiply into clusters.

Although genital warts aren’t typically serious, they may cause uncomfortable symptoms and be unsightly. They may also grow larger if left untreated. Treatments such as Condyline 0.5% solution allow you to remove genital warts safely and quickly.

How Does Condyline Work?

Podophyllotoxin, the active ingredient in Condyline 0.5% solution, works to eliminate genital warts around the penis, vagina and anus. It does this by entering the nucleus of wart cells and stopping cell division and multiplication. This stops genital warts from growing and eventually kills them off. The dead wart cells are replaced by new healthy skin cells.

Condyline Effectiveness

Research shows that Condyline 0.5% solution has up to a 92% success rate in clearing genital warts completely. As a fast-acting genital warts treatment that can stop warts from being contagious in just five days. It can control outbreaks of genital warts, stopping the lesions from growing and spreading, completely killing warts in a matter of weeks.

Condyline may require several weekly treatment cycles to be fully effective.

Condyline vs Warticon

Warticon is Condyline in cream form. The two medicines contain the same active ingredient – podophyllotoxin – and are both used for treating genital warts. Both Condyline and Warticon are prescription-only medications which are not available over the counter in the UK.

Condyline and Warticon work in the same way, penetrating tissue and stopping the wart cells from multiplying and growing, eventually killing the wart cells and allowing healthy cells to grow back in their place. The two medications are both applied directly to the affected area of the penis, vagina or anus twice per day for three consecutive days. Treatment cycles are then continued the following week if needed.

Condyline vs Aldara

Like Condyline, Aldara is a topical skin product that is used to treat genital warts. The two medications are both only available with a prescription in the UK. While Condyline comes in a liquid solution, Aldara is a cream. The two medications have different active ingredients.

Condyline contains podophyllotoxin, an antimitotic that prevents viral wart cells from dividing and multiplying, and Aldara contains imiquimod, an immune response humidifier that works by increasing the activity of your immune system.

Aldara – which is typically used as an alternative to cryotherapy (freezing) - also has several uses besides being a genital warts treatment, including; treating precancerous skin growths that develop due to too much sunlight exposure (small basal cell carcinomas) and treating slow-growing types of skin cancer (actinic keratoses).

Condyline and Aldara are both applied three times a week for genital warts in the same way, covering affected areas of the penis, vagina or anus.

A study which compared the effectiveness of podophyllotoxin (Condyline) and imiquimod (Aldara) found that there was a “considerable disparity” between how well the two medications achieve complete clearance of genital warts. Podophyllotoxin (Condyline) 0.5% solution was found to be superior, with a 92.6% probability of completely clearing lesions compared with 56.1% for imiquimod 5% cream.

Condyline Reviews

A large number of users have commented online that Condyline 0.5% solution was able to stop discomfort from their genital warts in a few days, and in many cases, clear them completely. Other users have said that their genital warts were gone in weeks. Reviewers online have reported that they started using Condyline due to alternative treatments such as Aldara being ineffective or giving them side effects.

Users have cautioned to take great care to only apply Condyline to warts themselves, as the solution will burn if it comes into contact with non-affected areas.

How Long Does It Take Condyline to Work?

After the first treatment cycle of three consecutive days, you should be able to see results from Condyline 0.5% solution. Your genital warts should have started to change colour or reduce in size. It may take up to four to five weeks, and multiple treatment cycles, before your warts have disappeared. Condyline can be used for several treatment cycles until your warts have gone.

Even if your warts have disappeared, you should always continue to use Condyline as prescribed, until the end of the treatment cycle. You shouldn’t use Condyline for more than five weeks in a row.

It should be highlighted that Condyline is not a cure for HPV, the infection that causes genital warts. Your body typically gets rid of the infection over time. Even when using Condyline, you can still get genital warts. For this reason, you still need to protect yourself from infection by using condoms and avoiding sharing sex toys when you are using Condyline.

How to Use Condyline

Condyline 0.5% solution is applied twice per day, once in the morning and once in the evening, leaving 12 hours between applications. You’ll normally be prescribed the medicine for an initial three-day treatment cycle. If your warts have not cleared, another three-day cycle, starting the following week, might be recommended.

If you miss an application, you should apply Condyline as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next application. In this case, skip the application you missed and proceed with the next treatment as usual. Don’t apply twice as much Condyline to make up for the missed application.

Applying Condyline 0.5% Solution

Before you apply Condyline, wash the affected areas thoroughly with soap and water and then dry them. Then, wash and dry your hands. Dip the end of the provided applicator into the bottle and allow it to fill with the solution. Apply it carefully to your warts, covering them all with the solution and ensuring you don’t apply any on unaffected skin. Leave the affected areas to dry. Wash your hands after using Condyline.

If you do apply the solution to healthy skin by mistake, wash your skin immediately with soap and water. Take care to avoid the solution coming into contact with your mouth, eyes or lips.
