Testosterone in men is an important sex hormone which regulates libido (sex drive), body mass, strength as well as being involved in the production of red blood cells and sperm.
As men get older, the amount of testosterone they produce falls. Some of the testosterone in men is converted to another hormone called oestrogen (specifically oestradiol). Oestradiol helps with libido and erectile function and so, as testosterone levels drop, so too does the level of oestradiol.
It’s not just age though that can reduce testosterone production. Overtraining and/or under fuelling in exercise can also result in low testosterone levels.
Symptoms of Low Testosterone
Several symptoms can arise from low testosterone in men including:
- Decreased sex drive (libido)
- Erectile Dysfunction
- Weight Gain (treatments for weight loss available here)
- Low mood
- Fatigue
- Difficulty sleeping
- Difficulty gaining muscle mass
Low testosterone is also associated with an increased risk of injuries such as stress fractures which may have significant consequences in older men but can also impact upon your usual daily routine including exercise and training.
A high testosterone blood test result can affect fertility by causing a low sperm count. A high intake of steroids to aid sports performance can also stop the body producing testosterone.

Total Testosterone Blood Test Kit
Cloud Pharmacy offers a home finger prick blood test which measures the total testosterone in your body. The blood sample is sent to our UKAS accredited lab for accurate results.
How does the test kit work?
When you request your test kit online, it will be dispatched the same day (before 3:30pm) on your selected delivery service. The test requires a small blood sample, which should be taken from your finger using the single use lancets into the sample bottle provided. You should perform the test and send it off as soon as possible. The test is best completed in the morning, preferably before 10am, and posted the same day to ensure the blood arrives in the best condition for testing.
The test kit includes full instructions that detail how to take a the blood sample and how to prepare it to be posted to the lab.

How long does it take for results?
Testosterone results are usually provided within 2 working days of posting your sample to the lab.
You will be sent a text message and/or email of your result.
What if my testosterone level is low?
If your levels of testosterone are too low (lower than 12nmol/L), a repeat test is recommended after 4 weeks. If the second test confirms that your testosterone levels are still low, you may need to be referred to a specialist by your GP to start treatment with testosterone replacement therapy.
If a test shows that your testosterone levels are in the normal range for your age, testosterone replacement therapy isn’t recommended and you will need to look into other possible causes of your symptoms.
Other possible causes of erectile dysfunction, low sex drive, fatigue, or weight gain can include mood disorders like anxiety and depression, or stress caused by a certain situation at home or work. In some cases your doctor may advise you to modify your lifestyle to improve your symptoms, including:
- Drinking less alcohol
- Quitting smoking
- Exercising more regularly
- Improving your diet
If you haven’t been treated for low testosterone before, you’ll need to consult your GP first.

Who should get their Testosterone level tested?
You might want to test your testosterone levels if you’re a man above 40 or you’re getting any of the following symptoms:
- you’re losing muscle mass or finding it hard to exercise
- you’re putting on a lot of weight, especially around your stomach or chest
- you feel like you don’t have enough energy
- you’re often tired or you have trouble sleeping
- you have poor concentration and memory
- you’re getting mood swings and irritability
Testosterone deficiency is rare and testosterone levels normally only drop 1-2% each year after the age of 40. There are other reasons why your testosterone levels might drop, including:
- your lifestyle
- psychological problems
- late-onset hypogonadism
- obesity
- diabetes type 2
If you often can’t get or keep erections then you might have a condition called erectile dysfunction. A low testosterone level is one possible cause of erectile dysfunction, but it only applies to 4-9% of men who have erectile dysfunction. Many men think about boosting their testosterone to improve their sexual performance but it’s not the right choice for most people.
