This article explains what Wegovy 7.2mg is, how effective it is, how it compares to Wegovy 2.4mg and Mounjaro 15mg, who it may be suitable for, how it is taken, and how to access it through Cloud Pharmacy.

As of 12 January 2026, Wegovy 7.2mg has been officially licensed for use in the UK, with full clinical trial data now published.

This approval marks an important development for people who have reached the standard Wegovy 2.4mg dose and may be looking for further support with their weight-management journey.

Throughout your treatment, our pharmacist prescribers carefully assess your progress and provide ongoing support, so any changes are made safely and at the right time for you.

What is Wegovy 7.2mg?

Wegovy 7.2mg is a newly licensed higher-dose optionwithin the Wegovy treatment range in the UK.

Wegovy is supplied in several strengths that are usually introduced gradually, allowing the dose to be increased over time. Until now, the highest available dose was 2.4mg.

The new 7.2mg strength offers an additional option for patients who have already reached the highest standard dose and may benefit from extra support with appetite control and weight management.

Like all Wegovy doses, it contains semaglutide as its active ingredient.

How Well Does Wegovy 7.2mg Work?

Wegovy 7.2mg has been studied in large clinical trials involving people living with obesity. These studies looked at how much weight people lost over time when using the higher dose, alongside healthy eating and increased physical activity.

Overall, results showed that the higher dose led to greater average weight loss than the standard 2.4mg dose.

Average Weight Loss After 72 Weeks

TreatmentAverage Weight Loss
Wegovy 7.2mg18.7% of starting body weight
Wegovy 2.4mg15.6% of starting body weight

Looking beyond averages gives an even clearer picture. In the studies, nearly one in three people using Wegovy 7.2mg lost at least 25% of their starting weight. By comparison, around one in seven people achieved this level of weight loss on the 2.4mg dose.

These results highlight what may be possible for some patients when a higher dose is appropriate.

How Does Wegovy 7.2mg Compare with Mounjaro 15mg?

Wegovy and Mounjaro work in different ways, which means people can respond differently to each treatment.

While individual experiences vary, clinical trial data helps provide an overall picture of how each medicine performs across larger groups of people, including average weight loss and common side effects.

Weight Loss Results

In clinical studies lasting just over a year (72 weeks), both treatments supported meaningful weight loss.

TreatmentAverage Weight Loss
Mounjaro 15mg22.5% of starting body weight
Wegovy 7.2mg18.7% of starting body weight
Wegovy 2.4mg15.6% of starting body weight

On average, Mounjaro 15mg was associated with greater weight loss. However, Wegovy 7.2mg still led to stronger results than the standard 2.4mg dose.

Side Effects Comparison

Stomach-related side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation were reported more often with Wegovy 7.2mg than with the standard 2.4mg dose and with Mounjaro 15mg in clinical studies.

The 7.2mg dose was also linked to a higher chance of unusual sensations such as tingling or burning feelings (called dysaesthesia), which were reported less often with the 2.4mg dose.

It’s important to remember that tolerability varies. Some people find one option easier to manage than another, which is why treatment decisions are always individual.

Who is Wegovy 7.2mg Suitable For?

Wegovy 7.2mg may be considered for adults who are already using the 2.4mg dose and have tolerated it well but may need additional support with appetite control or weight loss.

Before increasing the dose, a prescriber will review your progress and decide whether the higher strength is appropriate for you based on your individual needs and response to treatment.

Wegovy is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above if there is an associated weight-related health condition. Once started, treatment may be continued to support ongoing weight management and maintenance, even as BMI reduces, provided it remains clinically appropriate.

Is Wegovy 7.2mg Licensed for Weight Maintenance?

Yes. Wegovy 7.2mg is licensed to be used as part of ongoing weight management, including the maintenance of weight loss that has already been achieved.

For some people, the goal is to keep their weight stable once they have lost enough weight to improve their health or reach a target agreed with their clinician. If Wegovy 7.2mg helps maintain weight without causing troublesome side effects, a prescriber may recommend continuing at this dose as part of a maintenance plan.

There is no fixed time limit for staying on a maintenance dose. This is decided on an individual basis, taking into account your progress, tolerance, and overall health needs.

How Do I Take Wegovy 7.2mg?

Wegovy 7.2mg is taken once a week, on the same day each week.

To make up the full 7.2mg dose, you will give three separate 2.4mg injections on the same day. These are simple injections given just under the skin.

You can inject into the:

  • Abdomen (stomach)
  • Thigh
  • Upper arm

You should use the same general area for all three injections but choose a slightly different spot each time. Leave at least 5 cm between injections and avoid injecting into exactly the same place.

This way of taking Wegovy 7.2mg has been tested in clinical trials, reviewed as part of the UK approval process, and follows UK guidance.

For step-by-step instructions and diagrams showing exactly how to inject Wegovy, you can read the official patient information leaflet here.

If you are ever unsure about how to inject your dose, your clinical team can guide you step by step.

Is It Safe to Use the 7.2mg Dose?

Yes. The 7.2mg dose has been tested in large clinical trials and approved for use in the UK. Both the higher strength and the three-injection method have been carefully assessed.

It’s important that this dose is only started if you are already tolerating the 2.4mg dose well, with minimal side effects.

Stomach-related side effects are the most common and are more likely when increasing the dose. For many people, these effects are strongest at the start and improve over time as the body adjusts.

If symptoms become uncomfortable, your prescriber may suggest delaying the increase or temporarily returning to a lower dose.

When Will Wegovy 7.2mg be Available to Buy in the UK?

The higher 7.2mg dose was approved by the UK medicines regulator, the MHRA, on 12 January 2026, after clinical trial data demonstrated its safety and efficacy.
