When Eli Lilly increased the price of Mounjaro on the 1st September, many patients felt they had no choice but to switch to Wegovy. While Wegovy can be an effective option for weight management, some people have noticed it doesn’t control their appetite as well, or that side effects feel stronger. Because of this, lots of patients are now wondering if it’s possible to return to Mounjaro.
At Cloud Pharmacy, we want you to feel supported every step of the way. This guide will walk you through what to expect, what to consider, and how you can switch back from Wegovy to Mounjaro.
Step 1: Understanding the Switch From Mounjaro to Wegovy
Appetite Control
It’s normal to feel like your appetite is stronger when first moving from Mounjaro to Wegovy. The reason is that Mounjaro (tirzepatide) works on two hormone pathways (GIP and GLP-1), while Wegovy (semaglutide) works on just one (GLP-1). This makes Mounjaro generally stronger at suppressing appetite.
Because the two medicines aren’t directly equivalent, patients starting Wegovy need to begin at a lower dose. This lower starting point means appetite often feels less controlled at first, but as your Wegovy dose increases over time, most people find their appetite suppression improves again.
Helpful tip: Balanced meals with protein, fibre, fruit, and vegetables, along with plenty of water can help you feel fuller for longer while you adjust.
Side Effects
Some patients also notice more side effects on Wegovy compared with Mounjaro. These can include nausea, reflux, diarrhoea, or constipation. The good news is that these effects often improve over time as your body adapts.
Evidence from clinical trials has shown that both medicines have similar side effects. However, people were more likely to stop treatment due to side effects on Wegovy semaglutide compared with Mounjaro tirzepatide.
Helpful tip: Eating smaller, lighter meals and staying hydrated can make a big difference while your system adapts.
Step 2: Returning to Mounjaro
If you’ve given Wegovy a fair try but still feel your appetite isn’t under control, or if the side effects are affecting your day-to-day life, it may be worth considering a return to Mounjaro. Many patients find that Mounjaro provides stronger appetite suppression with fewer digestive side effects, which is why switching back can sometimes be the right choice.
Do I need to wait before restarting Mounjaro?
You’ll need to wait 7 days after your last Wegovy injection before starting Mounjaro again. This short break gives your body time to clear Wegovy and helps reduce the risk of unwanted side effects when you restart.
Will I go back to the same dose I was on before?
Not straight away. Mounjaro is generally stronger than Wegovy, and the two medicines are not directly equivalent. For safety, you’ll usually restart at a lower dose:
If it's been less than 6 weeks since your last Mounjaro injection → you’ll normally restart one step lower than your previous dose.
If it's more than 6 weeks ->
| Last Mounjaro Dose | Restarting Mounjaro Dose |
| 10mg, 12.5mg. 15mg | 5mg |
| 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg | 2.5mg |
Restarting at a lower dose doesn’t mean you’re going backwards - it’s simply the safest way to reintroduce Mounjaro and let your body adjust smoothly.
What should I expect when switching back to Mounjaro?
It’s important to know that when you restart Mounjaro, your appetite suppression may not feel as strong straight away. This is completely normal.
Because you’ve had a short break from treatment while on Wegovy, it can take time for the medicine to build back up in your system. Most patients find appetite suppression improves after 1–4 weeks, or once they return to the same dose they were on before switching.
Think of it as your body “re-adjusting” to Mounjaro - with a little patience, the effects you experienced before usually return.
Will my dose be personalised?
Absolutely. These are general guidelines only. Your prescriber will look at your full prescribing history and your overall health before confirming the safest and most effective dose for you.
