Both the Wegovy pill and Rybelsus are oral semaglutide, but they are different products: Rybelsus is licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss, at lower doses. The Wegovy pill is a higher-dose obesity product that is not yet UK-licensed. We do not offer Rybelsus as a weight-loss treatment, and using it off-licence for weight loss is not something we support. If you want the Wegovy pill, you can join the waitlist.
A common and important point of confusion is that the Wegovy pill and Rybelsus are 'the same thing'. They are both oral semaglutide, but they are different products with different licensed uses, and conflating them is exactly the kind of mistake this guide exists to prevent.

This page explains the difference clearly: Rybelsus is licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss, while the Wegovy pill is a higher-dose obesity product that is not yet UK-licensed. We do not offer Rybelsus as a weight-loss treatment. It is grounded in the UK-licensed product information and is general information, not advice.

Same molecule, different products

Both Rybelsus and the Wegovy pill contain semaglutide taken as a tablet, so it is easy to assume they are interchangeable 3. They are not: they are different products, with different brands, different licensed uses and different dose ranges 31.

The clearest way to think about it is that 'oral semaglutide' is a description that fits both, but a description is not a product 3. Each has its own licence defining what it is for, and those licences are not the same 3.

This matters because searches for 'Rybelsus for weight loss' are common, and the honest answer is that Rybelsus is not a licensed weight-loss treatment, however much it shares the molecule with the obesity products 3. The rest of this page sets out why 3.

Rybelsus is licensed for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss

Rybelsus is licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes, and its product information is for that use, at a maximum of 14 mg once daily3. It is not licensed for weight management 3.

That is the decisive distinction 3. Although weight change can occur with diabetes treatment, a licence for type 2 diabetes is not a licence for weight loss, and using Rybelsus to try to lose weight would be using it outside its licence 3.

Its product information also specifically advises that it should be used as one tablet per day, and that taking more than one tablet to achieve a higher-dose effect should not be done 3. So 'stacking' Rybelsus to mimic a higher obesity dose is both off-licence and advised against 3.

The Wegovy pill is a different, higher-dose obesity product

The Wegovy pill is a separate product, a higher-dose oral semaglutide intended for weight management, rather than the diabetes-dose Rybelsus 14. It is not yet licensed in the UK, and this guide makes no efficacy or dose claims for it as UK fact 14.

So the two are not different doses of one product you can move between; they are different products with different purposes 31. A higher obesity dose would be licensed as its own product after its own assessment, which is exactly why the Wegovy pill needs its own licence 4.

When the Wegovy pill is licensed in the UK, its dose, eligibility and use would be defined by that licence 4. Until then, it is not available here, and there is no legitimate route to obtain it 4.

Want to know when the Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide) becomes available in the UK? It is not yet licensed here, but you can join the waitlist to be notified, and explore the licensed options with a Cloud Pharmacy clinician in the meantime.

We do not offer Rybelsus for weight loss

To be completely clear: we do not offer Rybelsus as a weight-loss treatment3. Because it is licensed for type 2 diabetes rather than weight management, using it for weight loss would be off-licence, and that is not something this service supports or provides 3.

If you have seen Rybelsus promoted elsewhere as a weight-loss option, that framing does not match its UK licence, and an off-licence use is not the same as a licensed weight-loss treatment 3. The safe and accurate position is that, for weight loss, Rybelsus is not the answer 3.

This is a deliberate safeguarding choice 3. Steering people away from off-licence use, and towards licensed options or the appropriate future product, is part of using these medicines responsibly rather than chasing a search trend 32.

What this means if you want oral semaglutide for weight loss

If your interest is oral semaglutide for weight loss, the honest position is that the licensed answer does not yet exist in the UK: Rybelsus is for diabetes, and the Wegovy pill is not yet licensed here 34. So there is currently no licensed oral semaglutide for weight loss in the UK 3.

What is available now for weight management are the licensed injections, including the Wegovy injection, used within their UK licences after a proper assessment 12. A clinician can talk you through whether a licensed option suits you 1.

And if it is specifically the Wegovy pill you want, the appropriate step is to join the waitlist to be notified if and when it is licensed and available, rather than using Rybelsus off-licence or seeking an unlicensed product 4. That keeps you on a safe, licensed path 24.

The honest bottom line

The honest bottom line is that the Wegovy pill and Rybelsus are not the same: both are oral semaglutide, but Rybelsus is licensed for type 2 diabetes at lower doses, while the Wegovy pill is a higher-dose obesity product that is not yet UK-licensed 314.

We do not offer Rybelsus as a weight-loss treatment, because that would be off-licence, and there is currently no licensed oral semaglutide for weight loss in the UK 3. The licensed weight-management options are the injections 1.

If you want the Wegovy pill specifically, join the waitlist to be notified when it is available, and consider the licensed options with a prescriber in the meantime 42. Our guide on what the Wegovy pill is explains the product, and choosing a treatment covers what is licensed today 1.

Why the mix-up matters for safety

This is not just a naming technicality; the mix-up has real safety implications 32. If someone assumes Rybelsus is a weight-loss product and seeks it for that purpose, they may end up using a diabetes medicine off-licence, or be tempted to stack tablets to reach an obesity-style dose, which its product information specifically advises against 3.

There is also a risk that, frustrated by not finding a licensed oral weight-loss semaglutide, people turn to unregulated sellers offering a 'weight-loss semaglutide pill' 2. The NHS warns that some websites sell fake weight-loss medicines, and the confusion between products is exactly what such sellers exploit 2.

So getting the distinction right is protective 32. Knowing that Rybelsus is a diabetes medicine, that the Wegovy pill is not yet licensed here, and that neither is a shortcut to obtain off-licence or from an unverified source, keeps you away from the riskier paths 34.

It also helps you have a clearer conversation with a clinician 2. Rather than asking for a specific product you have seen mislabelled online, you can ask what licensed options are appropriate for you, which is a far more productive starting point 12.

If you have seen Rybelsus marketed for weight loss

You may have seen Rybelsus discussed or marketed as a weight-loss option, particularly online or from overseas sources 3. It is worth knowing that this does not match its UK licence, which is for type 2 diabetes, and that an off-licence framing does not make it a licensed weight-loss treatment 3.

Different countries and sellers can present medicines differently, but in the UK the licence is what defines the approved use, and for Rybelsus that is diabetes 3. We follow the UK licence, which is why we do not offer Rybelsus for weight loss 3.

If a source is offering Rybelsus specifically for weight loss, or offering a 'Wegovy pill' before it is licensed, treat that as a reason for caution rather than reassurance 24. Legitimate, licensed care follows the UK licence and comes through a registered pharmacy after a proper assessment 2.

The constructive path, if oral semaglutide for weight loss is what you are after, is to join the Wegovy pill waitlist for when a licensed product arrives, and to explore the licensed injections now, rather than acting on a mismatched marketing claim 41.

It is worth adding that none of this is a criticism of Rybelsus itself, which is a valuable medicine for the people it is licensed to treat 3. The point is simply that its place is in type 2 diabetes, not weight loss, and using the right medicine for the right purpose is what good, safe care looks like 32.

If you are living with type 2 diabetes, any conversation about Rybelsus belongs in that context, with the clinician managing your diabetes, rather than as a weight-loss decision 3. Keeping those two questions separate, diabetes care on one hand and weight management on the other, is part of why this distinction matters so much, and part of how we keep people on safe, licensed ground 32. Clarity here protects both your diabetes care and your weight-management choices 3.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Wegovy pill and Rybelsus the same?

No. Both are oral semaglutide, but Rybelsus is licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes at lower doses, not weight loss, while the Wegovy pill is a higher-dose obesity product that is not yet UK-licensed 314.

Can I use Rybelsus for weight loss?

Rybelsus is licensed for type 2 diabetes, not weight management, so using it for weight loss would be off-licence 3. We do not offer Rybelsus as a weight-loss treatment 3.

Can I take more than one Rybelsus tablet to get a higher dose?

No. Rybelsus product information says it should be used as one tablet per day, and that taking more than one to achieve a higher-dose effect should not be done 3. Stacking it is off-licence and advised against 3.

Is there a licensed oral semaglutide for weight loss in the UK?

Not currently. Rybelsus is for diabetes, and the Wegovy pill is not yet UK-licensed, so there is no licensed oral semaglutide for weight loss in the UK right now 34. The licensed weight-management options are the injections 1.

What should I do if I want the Wegovy pill?

Join the waitlist to be notified if and when it is licensed and available, rather than using Rybelsus off-licence or seeking an unlicensed product 4. A clinician can discuss the licensed options with you in the meantime 21.

Why do searches suggest Rybelsus is for weight loss?

Weight change can occur with diabetes treatment and Rybelsus shares the molecule with the obesity products, but that does not make it a licensed weight-loss treatment 3. Its UK licence is for type 2 diabetes only 3.

Your next step

The Wegovy pill and Rybelsus are not the same. Both are oral semaglutide, but Rybelsus is licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes at lower doses, not weight loss, while the Wegovy pill is a separate, higher-dose obesity product that is not yet UK-licensed. They are different products with different licences, not different doses of one medicine you can move between.

We do not offer Rybelsus as a weight-loss treatment, because that would be off-licence, and there is currently no licensed oral semaglutide for weight loss in the UK. If you want oral semaglutide for weight loss, the appropriate steps are to join the Wegovy pill waitlist to be notified if and when it is licensed, and to consider the licensed injection options with a prescriber in the meantime, rather than using Rybelsus off-licence or seeking an unlicensed product. That keeps you on a safe, licensed path.
