How does Nystatin Oral Suspension work?
Nystatin works by weakening the cell walls of the fungus, allowing the contents of the cell to spill out, thus killing the cell and clearing the infection.
It does this by attaching to a compound called ergosterol, which the cells need to maintain their cell membrane. This causes the cell wall to become weak and lose its structural integrity.
While you may notice an improvement in your symptoms within a day or two of taking Nystatin, it is important to continue to take Nystatin for the full period prescribed by your doctor in order to eradicate your infection.
Similarly to antibiotics, ceasing Nystatin treatment early can cause the infection to come back. Therefore, it is important to complete your course of antifungal medication as prescribed.

How do I use Nystatin Oral Suspension?
- It is to be used FOUR times daily with the doses spaced evenly throughout the day.
- Before using this medicine, it is imperative that you have read the patient information leaflet which can be found here and inside the box.
- Shake the bottle well before using the drops.
- With the dropper, drop the liquid inside your mouth near the affected areas without the dropper touching the mouth as you do this. Swish the suspenstion around your mouth and then keep it on the affected areas for as long as manageable before swallowing.
- The longer the nystatin is in contact with the infected areas, the better.
- It is recommended that the drops are used after mealtimes to prevent the medicine being washed out.
- If you forget to take a dose, have one as soon as you remember. Please note that taking two drops at the same time is not advised.
- A course should last 7 days even if symptoms improve.
