What is Lyclear Dermal Cream?
Permethrin is the active ingredient in Lyclear Dermal cream - a cream used in treating infestations of scabies, pubic lice and crab lice on the body. It contains the active ingredient permethrin, which works to kill the scabies mites. Generally, permethrin will be effective in controlling an infestation after just one application. To make sure your treatment is successful, read the advice on how to apply the cream carefully.
The itching associated with scabies can continue for up to 4 weeks even after a successful application of permethrin Dermal Cream, as the dead mites and eggs are still attached to the skin. There is no need to reapply the cream within this period. You can relieve symptoms of the itch by applying itch relief creams or taking an antihistamine.
How does Lyclear work?
The active ingredient Permethrin works by affecting insects (including lice and mites) nervous systems causing them to have muscle spasms, become paralysed and die. While low concentrations of permethrin are highly effective on insects, it does not have the same negative effects on humans in these small doses, making it a generally well-tolerated medicine.
How much Lyclear do I need to use?
Adults should use one tube containing 30 grams of cream.
Children aged between 6 & 12 years old should apply 15 grams of cream (half a tube).
Children aged between 2 & 5 years old should apply 7.5 grams (quarter of a tube).
Children below 2 years old must be seen by a doctor.
How do I apply Lyclear for Scabies?
Both adults and children (aged over 2) should apply the cream across the entire body including the neck, palms of the hands, soles of the feet and even facial hair if affected. Please note that the head, neck and face should only be treated if affected.
You must pay extra attention to armpits, between fingers and toes, genital areas, buttock and wrists. It is recommended that the cream is left overnight before washing.

Side Effects
Lyclear Dermal Cream (Permethrin 5%) Side Effects
Most people who use Permethrin Cream will not experience any side effects, however, if you do they may include:
Burning or stinging of the skin (this is usually slight and passes quickly).
Treatment of scabies may result in continued or increased irritation for a short while. This may show as redness or swelling of the skin, a rash or itching.
You might find that the itching you have been experiencing with scabies continues for up to 4 weeks after treatment with Permethrin Cream. This is normal and caused by an allergic reaction to the dead scabies mites. It is not a sign that treatment has failed.
If you do experience any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

To help relieve the symptoms associated with scabies or lice, you can use an anti-histamine or anti-itch cream to relieve these symptoms if required. Examples include;

These may be particularly useful even after permethrin use, as itching can continue for weeks after treatment. This does not necessarily mean you still have the mite.
