Overview
Medicated Shampoos for Scalp Conditions
Medicated shampoos are specifically formulated to treat scalp conditions such as persistent dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis and scalp psoriasis. Unlike regular anti-dandruff shampoos, medicated shampoos contain active pharmaceutical ingredients that target the underlying causes of these conditions - whether that is an overgrowth of yeast on the scalp, excessive skin cell turnover, or inflammation.
Cloud Pharmacy stocks medicated shampoos from trusted UK brands. All products are dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy team and delivered to your door.
Who Are These Products For?
- Persistent dandruff that has not responded to regular anti-dandruff shampoos
- Seborrhoeic dermatitis (a flaky, itchy, red scalp often caused by yeast overgrowth)
- Scalp psoriasis (thickened, scaly patches on the scalp)
- Itchy, irritated or inflamed scalp requiring medicated treatment
Important Safety Information
- Use medicated shampoos as directed - typically two to three times per week, not daily
- If scalp symptoms worsen or do not improve after four weeks of treatment, consult your pharmacist or GP
- Coal tar shampoos (Polytar, Capasal) can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight - avoid excessive sun exposure on treated areas
Available Treatments
Nizoral Dandruff Shampoo (Ketoconazole 2%)
Nizoral contains ketoconazole, an antifungal agent that targets the Malassezia yeast responsible for dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis. It is typically used twice weekly for two to four weeks for treatment, then once every one to two weeks for maintenance. Suitable for adults and children aged 12 and over.
Polytar Scalp Treatment Shampoo (Coal Tar)
Polytar contains coal tar solution, which has anti-inflammatory, antifungal and anti-itch properties. It helps to slow the rapid skin cell growth associated with scalp psoriasis and reduce flaking, itching and irritation. Used two to three times per week.
Capasal Therapeutic Shampoo (Coal Tar + Salicylic Acid + Coconut Oil)
Capasal combines coal tar with salicylic acid (which helps to soften and remove scales) and coconut oil (which moisturises the scalp). This triple-action formula is suited to scalp psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and severe dandruff with thick scaling.

| Persistent dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis | Nizoral | Ketoconazole (antifungal) |

FAQ
Can I use medicated shampoo every day?
Most medicated shampoos are designed for use two to three times per week, not daily. On non-treatment days, use your regular shampoo. Overuse can cause scalp dryness or irritation.
How long does it take for medicated shampoo to work?
Nizoral typically shows improvement within two to four weeks. Coal tar shampoos may take a similar period. If there is no improvement after four weeks, speak to your pharmacist or GP.
