Treatments for Ear Infections
Outer ear infections (otitis externa), sometimes called swimmer's ear, cause pain, itching and irritation in the ear canal. They are often caused by bacteria or fungi and can be triggered by water entering the ear, scratching the ear canal, or using cotton buds. Mild outer ear infections can often be treated with over-the-counter ear sprays that restore the natural acidity of the ear canal.
Cloud Pharmacy stocks ear infection treatments dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy team.
Important Safety Information
- Do not use ear drops or sprays if you have a perforated eardrum or grommets unless advised by a doctor
- If symptoms suggest a middle ear infection (deep ear pain, fever, hearing loss), see your GP as these may require prescription treatment
- If symptoms do not improve within 5 to 7 days, speak to your pharmacist or GP
Available Treatments
EarCalm Spray (Acetic Acid 2%)
EarCalm contains acetic acid, which restores the natural acidic environment of the ear canal, making it hostile to the bacteria and fungi that cause outer ear infections. It is sprayed directly into the affected ear up to three times daily for up to seven days. Suitable for adults and children aged 12 and over.

FAQ
How do I know if I have an outer or middle ear infection?
Outer ear infections typically cause pain when the ear is touched or pulled, itching in the ear canal, and sometimes discharge. Middle ear infections cause deep pain inside the ear, often with fever and temporary hearing loss. If you suspect a middle ear infection, see your GP.
