Treating Common Ear Problems
Ear problems such as excess earwax, ear infections and blocked ears are common complaints that can cause discomfort, reduced hearing and a feeling of fullness in the ear. Most mild ear conditions can be managed effectively at home with the right over-the-counter treatment, though persistent or severe symptoms should always be assessed by a pharmacist or GP.
Cloud Pharmacy stocks a range of ear care products, including olive oil drops and sprays for softening earwax, medicated ear drops for minor infections, and wax removal solutions. All products are dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy team.
Who Are These Treatments For?
These products may be appropriate if you are experiencing:
- A feeling of blocked or muffled hearing due to earwax build-up
- Discomfort or fullness in the ear
- Itching in the ear canal
- Mild outer ear infection (swimmer's ear) causing pain or irritation
Do not use ear drops if you have a perforated eardrum, grommets, or discharge coming from your ear, unless advised by a doctor. If you experience sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, discharge, dizziness, or ringing in the ears (tinnitus) that does not resolve, seek medical advice promptly.
Important Safety Information
- Do not insert cotton buds, fingers or any objects into the ear canal - this can push wax deeper and risk damage to the eardrum
- If you suspect a perforated eardrum, do not use any ear drops without medical advice
- Ear drops should be warmed to room temperature before use to reduce discomfort
- If symptoms do not improve within 5–7 days of using ear drops, speak to your pharmacist or GP
Available Treatment Types
Earwax Softening Drops and Sprays
Olive oil ear drops and sprays (Cerumol, Earol) are the most commonly recommended first-line treatment for earwax build-up. They work by softening the wax, making it easier for the ear to naturally expel it over several days. Earol is available as a spray for easier application. These are generally safe for regular use and are often recommended by GPs before ear syringing or microsuction procedures.
Earwax Removal Solutions
Otex ear drops contain hydrogen peroxide (urea hydrogen peroxide), which actively breaks down and helps remove hardened earwax. Otex Express Combi Pack includes both ear drops and a bulb syringe for more thorough wax removal at home. These are suited to stubborn wax that has not responded to olive oil alone.
Ear Infection Treatments
Earcalm Spray contains acetic acid, which helps restore the natural acidity of the ear canal and is used to treat mild outer ear infections (otitis externa). It is suitable for adults and children aged 12 and over. If symptoms suggest a middle ear infection (pain deep inside the ear, fever, hearing loss), see your GP as these may require prescription treatment.

FAQ
How long should I use olive oil drops for earwax?
Use olive oil drops for 3–5 days, applying 2–3 drops into the affected ear twice daily. Lie on your side with the affected ear facing upward for 5–10 minutes after application to allow the oil to penetrate the wax. In many cases, the wax will soften and leave the ear naturally. If symptoms persist, speak to your GP about ear syringing or microsuction.
Should I use cotton buds to clean my ears?
No. The NHS advises against inserting cotton buds or any objects into the ear canal. This can push wax deeper, cause impaction, and risk perforating the eardrum. The ear is largely self-cleaning, wax naturally migrates outward. If you experience a build-up, use softening drops rather than mechanical removal.
When should I see a doctor about ear problems?
See your GP if you experience sudden hearing loss in one or both ears, severe ear pain, persistent discharge from the ear, a feeling of spinning or dizziness, ringing in the ears that does not resolve, or symptoms that do not improve after a week of using over-the-counter treatment.
