The arrival of the Wegovy pill marks a major shift in weight-loss treatment. Until now, most prescription options have relied on injections, a barrier that has prevented some people from seeking treatment altogether.

However, the Wegovy tablet is not simply “Wegovy in pill form.” It comes with specific dosing instructions and a gradual dose-escalation schedule designed to help your body adjust safely over time. Knowing what to expect at each stage can make starting treatment feel far more manageable and less intimidating.

What is the Wegovy Pill?

Wegovy tablets are a prescription weight-management treatment developed by Novo Nordisk. They contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in the Wegovy injection.

Semaglutide works by mimicking GLP-1, a naturally occurring hormone released after eating that helps regulate appetite and fullness. By mimicking the effects of this hormone, Wegovy tablets can:

● Help reduce hunger

● Increase feelings of fullness

● Slow how quickly the stomach empties

● Help you feel satisfied with smaller portions

What do the clinical trial results reveal?

Oral semaglutide has been rigorously studied in a large international clinical trial known as OASIS 4. The findings were published in The New England Journal of Medicine in September 2025 and were later approved by the FDA in December 2025, making it the first oral GLP-1 medication approved specifically for weight loss.

The OASIS 4 trial followed people over 64 weeks and compared the medication with a placebo (a treatment with no active medicine). The study was carried out at 22 medical centres across four countries.

Researchers enrolled 307 adults without type 2 diabetes who had a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above with at least one weight-related condition.

Key results

● Average weight loss: approx 14% with the Wegovy pill

● Participants who completed the full study over 64 weeks lost an average of 16.6% of body weight

● 60% of people (6 in 10) achieved at least 10% weight loss

● 50% of people (5 in 10) achieved 15% or more weight loss

● 30% of people (1 in 4) achieved 20% or more weight loss

It’s important to note how these results are reported. The 14% figure includes all participants regardless of whether they completed the trial or adhered fully to treatment. Whereas, for people who completed the full study, average weight loss reached 16.6%, so it is this figure that gives us the better insight into the effectiveness of the treatment.

Beyond weight loss, the trial also found meaningful improvements in physical function. Participants taking oral semaglutide reported significantly better quality-of-life scores related to the physical impact of their weight.

How do I take the Wegovy Pill?

Unlike the injections, Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy tablets must be taken in a very specific way to work properly. It needs to be taken:

● Once daily first thing in the morning on an empty stomach

● Using no more than 120ml of plain water

● The tablet should be swallowed whole and never crushed, chewed or split

● After taking it, you must wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking any other oral medications

These instructions are not simply recommendations, they are essential for proper absorption. Unlike injections, oral semaglutide has to survive the stomach long enough to enter the bloodstream. Food, coffee, excess water, or even a partially full stomach can interfere with the tablet’s SNAC coating and significantly reduce absorption, sometimes to almost zero.

How does dosing work with the Wegovy Pill?

Like the Wegovy injection, the strength of the Wegovy pill is increased gradually over time. Wegovy tablets are available in four strengths: 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg, and 25mg.

Treatment starts with one tablet daily at the lowest dose, with gradual increases every 30 days depending on how well your body tolerates the medication and the level of appetite suppression achieved. The dose-escalation process is designed to help minimise side effects while allowing your body time to adjust safely.

At Cloud Pharmacy, dose increases are guided through ongoing communication between you and your prescriber. If you experience stronger side effects, your prescriber may recommend staying on a lower dose for longer to give your body more time to adjust to the medication.

Below outlines the standard dosing schedule:

● Days 1 to 30: 1.5mg once daily

● Days 31 to 60: 4mg once daily

● Days 61 to 90: 9mg once daily

● Day 91 onwards: 25mg once daily

What can you expect at each dose stage?

Everyone’s experience with the Wegovy tablet is slightly different. Some people notice appetite changes and early weight loss within the first few weeks, while others experience more significant results after reaching higher doses. Side effects can also vary considerably from person to person.

That said, there are some common patterns people tend to experience as treatment progresses. Here’s a general guide to what you might expect from starting treatment through to the maintenance phase:

DaysDoseStageWhat you can expect
1 to 301.5mgStarting dose

Designed primarily to help your body build tolerance to the medication.

At this stage, most people will not see substantial weight loss, which is completely normal.

31 to 604mgStep up dose

The effects of the medication become more noticeable in day to day life. At this point many people report:

➔ Feeling satisfied more quickly when eating

➔ Reduced urge to snack between meals

➔ Fewer cravings and less ‘food noise’

61 to 909mgStep up dose

Appetite control typically becomes more pronounced and weight changes may start to feel more obvious. Some people experience earlier progress, but for many, the most noticeable shifts tend to occur once they reach 9mg and above.

It’s also important to remember that weight loss doesn’t happen in a straight line. Progress can vary from week to week, with periods of faster change followed by slower changes, this is a normal pattern and doesn't mean the treatment has stopped working.

91 onwards25mgHighest dose

This is the full maintenance step, where the majority of the weight loss typically occurs.

In clinical trials, people taking the 25mg Wegovy tablet lost on average around 14-17% of their starting body weight over 64 weeks.

Wegovy Pill Side Effects

The side-effect profile seen in the OASIS 4 trial was broadly consistent with previous studies of injectable semaglutide.

The most commonly reported side effects were gastrointestinal-related, these include:

● Nausea

● Vomiting

● Diarrhoea

● Constipation

● Stomach pain

● Bloating

● Indigestion

Other common side effects reported include headaches, tiredness and dizziness.

These symptoms occurred most often during the dose-escalation phase, when the medication is gradually increased, and were generally described as mild to moderate.

Like the injectable version, the Wegovy pill includes a serious safety warning because thyroid tumours were seen in animal studies. Although this has not been confirmed in people, the medicine is not recommended for anyone with a personal or family history of a rare type of thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid carcinoma.

What should you do if side effects become difficult?

Gastrointestinal symptoms are the most frequent concern people have when starting or increasing GLP-1 treatment. Mild effects such as nausea, bloating, constipation, or diarrhoea are fairly common, particularly during dose escalation, but they should remain manageable and not overwhelming. If these side effects are difficult to manage, you can contact one of our clinicians for tailored advice.

Simple measures like keeping well hydrated and opting for smaller, lighter meals can often help ease symptoms. However, if side effects are proving difficult, your prescriber may adjust your treatment plan by:

● Keeping you on the same dose for longer

● Postponing the next dose increase

● Temporarily stepping the dose back

These adjustments are a normal part of treatment and do not indicate that the medication is not working. In fact, finding the right balance between benefit and tolerability is key to achieving sustainable results over time.

Some symptoms require urgent medical attention, please contact your GP or NHS 24 (111) if you experience any of the following:

● Dehydration: Severe persistent nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea can lead to dehydration.

● Pancreatitis: Severe stomach pain that won’t go away, with or without nausea or vomiting. The pain may also spread to your back. This is rare but serious and you should go to A&E.

● Gallstones: Pain in your upper stomach, usually after eating, can signal gallstones.

● Severe stomach problems: Stomach issues that are severe, persistent and don’t improve.

● Serious allergic reaction: Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing or swallowing, a severe skin rash, feeling faint or a very fast heartbeat.

● Changes in vision: If you have type 2 diabetes and notice any changes to your eyesight or vision, contact your doctor.

If any side effect continues, feels severe, or starts to interfere with your day-to-day life, it’s important to let us know. Adjusting the dose or pausing treatment for a short time is usually a safer and more effective option than stopping the medication yourself.

Is the Wegovy Pill right for me?

The Wegovy tablet may be suitable if you’re looking for a clinically supported weight-management treatment, some benefits include:

No needles or sharps bins: Tablets may be preferred for people who are uncomfortable with injections.

No fridge storage required: This makes the tablet easier to travel with and store.

Proven weight loss in clinical trials: The OASIS 4 trial demonstrated significant, clinically meaningful weight loss with the oral Wegovy pill, comparable to the injection.*

Same eligibility as injections: If you'd qualify for the Wegovy injection, you may be eligible for the pill — though suitability will always be confirmed through a clinical consultation with one of our prescribers.

It is not suitable for everyone, Wegovy tablets have similar restrictions to injections based on things like existing health conditions or other medications.

Your treatment plan isn’t fixed. It can be reviewed and adjusted based on how you respond and what you’re able to tolerate, ensuring it remains safe, effective, and manageable for you over time.

Wegovy Pill FAQ

Can I switch between the Wegovy injection and the Wegovy pill?

If and when it is approved by the MHRA, switching should be possible because both forms contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide. However, the doses are not directly the same, as the body absorbs tablets and injections differently.

Our prescribers would guide you on the most appropriate starting dose based on your current treatment, your goals, and how well you are tolerating the medication.

How much is the Wegovy pill expected to cost?

The price of the Wegovy pill in the UK has not yet been confirmed. The final cost is likely to vary depending on the prescribed dose and other pricing decisions made after approval. More information on UK pricing should become available once the medication receives regulatory approval.

Is the Wegovy pill the same as Rybelsus?

No. While both medicines contain semaglutide, they are different treatments. The Wegovy pill is a higher-dose tablet developed for weight management, taken up to 25 mg daily. Rybelsus is a lower-dose tablet used to treat type 2 diabetes, although it may sometimes be prescribed off-label for weight loss.

Can I drink alcohol while taking the Wegovy Pill?

Yes, you can drink alcohol while taking the Wegovy pill, but it’s best to be careful. There is no direct interaction between alcohol and Wegovy tablets. However, alcohol may make common side effects such as nausea, indigestion, or stomach discomfort more noticeable. It can also affect blood sugar levels, which is particularly important if you have diabetes. If you do drink, it’s advisable to keep within moderation and see how your body responds.

*Based on clinical trial data. In the OASIS 4 trial, oral semaglutide 25 mg produced a mean weight loss of 13.6% over 64 weeks. Direct head-to-head comparisons with the Wegovy® injection have not been conducted.
