Overview

Oral Health Products and Treatments

Good oral health is essential for overall wellbeing, yet mouth problems such as mouth ulcers, cold sores, dry mouth, gum disease and toothache are extremely common. Many oral health conditions can be managed effectively with over-the-counter treatments, though persistent or severe symptoms should be assessed by a dentist or pharmacist.

Cloud Pharmacy stocks over 25 teeth and mouth care products, including mouth ulcer treatments, cold sore creams, dry mouth remedies, gum care products and oral pain relief. All products are dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy team.

Who Are These Products For?

These products may be appropriate if you are experiencing:

  • Mouth ulcers (painful sores on the inside of the mouth, tongue or lips)
  • Cold sores (fluid-filled blisters on or around the lips caused by the herpes simplex virus)
  • Dry mouth (xerostomia), often caused by medication, dehydration, or mouth breathing
  • Sore, bleeding or inflamed gums
  • Toothache or dental pain while awaiting a dental appointment
  • Cracked, dry or chapped lips

If you have a mouth ulcer that has not healed within three weeks, a lump or persistent white or red patch in the mouth, or severe dental pain with swelling or fever, see your dentist or GP urgently.

Important Safety Information

  • Mouth ulcer gels containing local anaesthetics (such as Anbesol, Bonjela) should not be used in children under the recommended age stated on the packaging
  • Chlorhexidine mouthwashes (Corsodyl) can cause temporary staining of the teeth with prolonged use - use for short courses only unless directed by a dentist
  • Cold sore creams (containing aciclovir) are most effective when applied at the first sign of a tingling sensation, before the blister fully develops
  • Do not use oral pain relief products as a substitute for dental treatment - see a dentist for a persistent toothache

Available Treatment Types

Mouth Ulcer Treatments

Anbesol and Bonjela are topical gels that provide fast-acting relief from mouth ulcer pain. Anbesol contains a local anaesthetic (lidocaine) that numbs the area on contact. Bonjela Adult Gel contains choline salicylate, which has both pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties. These can be applied directly to the ulcer as needed.

Cold Sore Treatments

Blistex Relief Cream helps soothe and protect cold sores and cracked lips. For active cold sores, antiviral creams containing aciclovir (available elsewhere on the site under specific product pages) are the most effective option when applied early. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus and tend to recur, particularly during times of stress, illness, or sun exposure.

Dry Mouth Remedies

Biotene offers a range of dry mouth products, including moisturising mouthwash and oral balance saliva replacement gel. Dry mouth can be caused by certain medications (antidepressants, blood pressure medicines, antihistamines), dehydration, or mouth breathing. Maintaining moisture in the mouth is important for comfort, speech, and reducing the risk of dental decay.

Gum Care

Corsodyl mouthwash and toothpaste contain chlorhexidine, an antiseptic that helps reduce plaque bacteria and treat gum disease (gingivitis). It is particularly useful after dental procedures or during periods of gum inflammation. Sensodyne toothpaste is formulated for sensitive teeth and helps protect against pain caused by hot, cold or sweet foods and drinks.

FAQ

How long do mouth ulcers usually last?

Most mouth ulcers heal on their own within 1–2 weeks without treatment. Over-the-counter gels and mouthwashes can help manage pain and speed healing. If a mouth ulcer has not healed within three weeks, is unusually large, keeps coming back, or is painless (which can be more concerning), see your dentist or GP for assessment.

Can I use Corsodyl mouthwash every day?

Corsodyl (chlorhexidine) mouthwash is generally intended for short-term use, typically up to four weeks, unless directed by a dentist. Prolonged use can cause reversible brown staining of the teeth and altered taste. For daily use, consider Corsodyl Daily mouthwash, which contains a lower concentration of active ingredients.

When should I see a dentist about mouth problems?

See a dentist if you have a persistent toothache, a mouth ulcer lasting more than three weeks, loose or damaged teeth, swelling in the mouth, jaw or face, bleeding gums that do not improve with improved brushing, or any unexplained lumps, patches or changes in the mouth.
