Over-the-counter sleeping aids are intended for short-term use only. If you experience persistent sleep problems lasting more than four weeks, difficulty functioning during the day due to poor sleep, or symptoms such as excessive daytime sleepiness, loud snoring with pauses in breathing, or restless legs, speak to your GP. Chronic insomnia may benefit from cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) rather than medication.
Important Safety Information
Tell your pharmacist if you have glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, breathing difficulties, liver or kidney problems, or epilepsy before taking antihistamine-based sleep aids
- These products should not be used for more than two consecutive weeks without medical advice
- Antihistamine-based sleeping tablets (such as Nytol and Sominex) can cause drowsiness that persists into the following morning - do not drive or operate machinery until you are sure the effects have worn off
- Do not take sleeping aids alongside alcohol or other sedating medicines
- Herbal sleeping aids (such as Kalms) may interact with other medications - check with your pharmacist if you are taking other medicines

Antihistamine-Based Sleeping Tablets
Nytol and Sominex contain diphenhydramine or promethazine, sedating antihistamines that can help you fall asleep. They are designed for short-term use (up to two weeks) and work by blocking histamine receptors in the brain, which promotes drowsiness. They are effective for occasional sleeplessness but are not suitable as a long-term solution.
Herbal Sleep Remedies
Kalms Sleep tablets contain valerian root extract, a traditional herbal remedy used to help relieve sleep disturbances and mild anxiety. They offer a non-pharmaceutical approach to sleep support and may be preferred by people who want to avoid antihistamine-based products. As with all herbal remedies, effectiveness varies between individuals.
Nasal Strips
Breathe Right nasal strips are adhesive strips applied to the outside of the nose. They work by gently opening the nasal passages, improving airflow and reducing snoring. They may help people whose sleep is disrupted by nasal congestion or mild breathing difficulties at night. They are drug-free and suitable for nightly use.

How long can I take over-the-counter sleeping tablets for?
Antihistamine-based sleeping aids such as Nytol and Sominex are intended for short-term use only - typically up to two weeks. If you still have difficulty sleeping after this period, stop taking them and speak to your GP. Long-term use can reduce their effectiveness and may mask an underlying sleep disorder.
Are herbal sleeping aids effective?
Valerian root (the active ingredient in Kalms Sleep) has been used as a traditional sleep remedy for centuries.
