Dry mouth (xerostomia) occurs when the salivary glands do not produce enough saliva to keep the mouth moist. It can be caused by certain medications (including antidepressants, blood pressure medicines and antihistamines), dehydration, mouth breathing, or underlying medical conditions. What causes dry mouth?
Dry mouth is most commonly caused by medications (more than 400 medicines list dry mouth as a side effect), including antidepressants, blood pressure medicines, antihistamines and diuretics. Other causes include dehydration, mouth breathing (especially during sleep), radiotherapy to the head and neck, and conditions such as Sjögren's syndrome. If dry mouth is persistent, speak to your GP or dentist.
