Treatments for Constipation
Constipation is a common digestive complaint characterised by infrequent bowel movements, difficulty passing stools, or a feeling of incomplete emptying. It can be caused by a low-fibre diet, insufficient fluid intake, lack of exercise, changes in routine, stress, or certain medications. Most cases respond well to dietary changes and over-the-counter laxatives.
There are different types of laxative, and choosing the right one depends on the nature and severity of your constipation. The NHS recommends trying a bulk-forming laxative first, moving to an osmotic laxative if needed, and using stimulant laxatives only for short-term relief when other options have not worked.
Cloud Pharmacy stocks a range of constipation treatments from trusted UK brands. All products are dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy team.
Important Safety Information
Drink plenty of fluids when taking any laxative, particularly bulk-forming and osmotic types
Stimulant laxatives (such as Senokot and Dulcolax) should only be used for short periods and are not suitable for long-term use
If constipation persists beyond two weeks despite treatment, or is accompanied by blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, or severe abdominal pain, see your GP
Tell your pharmacist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as some laxatives may not be suitable
Available Treatments
Fybogel (Ispaghula Husk) - Bulk-Forming Laxative
Fybogel contains ispaghula husk, a natural source of soluble fibre that absorbs water and bulks up the stool, making it softer and easier to pass. It is the recommended first-line laxative. Mixed with water and taken once or twice daily. Available in orange and lemon flavours.
Laxido / Movicol (Macrogol) - Osmotic Laxative
Laxido and Movicol contain macrogol, an osmotic laxative that works by drawing water into the bowel to soften the stool. They are effective when bulk-forming laxatives have not provided sufficient relief. Dissolved in water and typically taken one to three sachets daily.
Lactulose - Osmotic Laxative
Lactulose is a liquid osmotic laxative that draws water into the bowel. It may take two to three days to take effect. It is generally well tolerated and can be used during pregnancy when needed.
Senokot (Senna) - Stimulant Laxative
Senokot contains senna, a stimulant laxative that works by stimulating the muscles of the bowel to push stool through. It typically works within 8 to 12 hours and is usually taken at bedtime for a morning result. For short-term use only.
Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) - Stimulant Laxative
Dulcolax contains bisacodyl, another stimulant laxative. Available as tablets (which work within 10 to 12 hours) and suppositories (which work within 20 to 60 minutes). For short-term use only.
