Cold Sore Treatments
Cold sores are small, fluid-filled blisters that appear on or around the lips, caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1). They are extremely common, affecting around one in five people in the UK. Cold sores tend to recur, particularly during times of stress, illness, fatigue or sun exposure. Antiviral creams are most effective when applied at the earliest stage - as soon as you feel the initial tingling or itching sensation before the blister appears.

Cold sores are contagious. Avoid kissing, sharing utensils, towels or lip products while a cold sore is present

Zovirax Cold Sore Cream (Aciclovir 5%)
Zovirax contains aciclovir, an antiviral that works by stopping the herpes simplex virus from replicating. Applied five times daily (approximately every four hours) for five days, starting at the first sign of tingling. It can speed up healing and reduce the severity of the outbreak.
Blistex Relief Cream
Blistex Relief Cream helps soothe and protect cold sores and severely chapped or cracked lips. It contains emollients and mild antiseptic ingredients to keep the area moisturised and protected during healing.

How long do cold sores take to heal?
Cold sores typically heal within 7 to 10 days without treatment. Antiviral cream (such as Zovirax) can speed up healing by one to two days when applied at the first sign of tingling. The blister stage usually lasts two to three days before the sore crusts over and heals.
