Overview

Healthcare Products for Babies and Children

From teething and colic in the early months to childhood coughs, fevers and skin irritation, parents and carers need access to safe, effective treatments they can trust. Knowing which products are suitable for your child's age and symptoms is essential, many medicines designed for adults are not appropriate for young children, and dosing requirements vary significantly depending on age and weight.

Cloud Pharmacy stocks over 250 baby and child healthcare products across categories, including fever and pain relief, cough and cold remedies, teething treatments, nappy care, dry skin solutions, colic relief, chickenpox care, infant formula and vitamin drops. All products are from trusted UK brands and are dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy team.

Who Are These Products For?

These products are intended for use by parents, carers and guardians treating babies and children. Age suitability varies by product:

  • Infant paracetamol (e.g. Calpol Infant Suspension) is typically suitable from 2 months of age
  • Children's cough medicines (e.g. Benylin Children's) are usually suitable from age 6 and above
  • Teething gels (e.g. Bonjela, Calgel) are generally suitable from 4–5 months
  • Nappy creams and skin products are suitable from birth in most cases
  • Infant formula products are suitable from birth unless otherwise stated

Always check the age range on the product label and patient information leaflet before use. If you are unsure which product is appropriate for your child, speak to our pharmacy team.

Important Safety Information

  • Always use the correct dosing syringe or spoon provided with liquid medicines; kitchen spoons are not accurate
  • Do not give aspirin or aspirin-containing products to children under 16 years of age
  • Paracetamol-based products (e.g. Calpol) and ibuprofen-based products (e.g. Nurofen for Children) should not be combined without pharmacist or GP guidance unless specifically advised
  • Check active ingredients carefully to avoid accidentally giving your child the same medicine twice in different forms
  • Do not exceed the recommended dose or frequency for your child's age and weight
  • Seek medical advice if your child has a temperature above 38°C and is under 3 months old, or if symptoms persist beyond 3 days

If your child becomes drowsy, unresponsive, develops a rash that does not fade under pressure, has difficulty breathing, or shows signs of dehydration (no wet nappies for 12+ hours, sunken fontanelle), seek urgent medical help immediately.

Available Product Types

Fever and Pain Relief

Calpol (paracetamol) is the most widely used children's pain and fever treatment in the UK. It is available as a sugar-free infant suspension (from 2 months) and a 6+ formulation for older children. It helps reduce high temperatures and relieve pain from teething, earache, headaches and sore throats. Always follow the age-specific dosing instructions on the packaging.

Cough, Cold and Flu Remedies

Children's cough and cold medicines are specifically formulated with lower, age-appropriate doses. Benylin Children's range includes syrups for chesty coughs, dry coughs and night-time coughs (suitable from age 6). Benylin Infant Cough Syrup is available for younger children. Calpol Saline Nasal Spray can help relieve nasal congestion in babies and young children without medication.

Teething Treatments

Teething gels such as Bonjela Soothing Teething Gel and Calpol Calgel provide topical relief for sore gums during teething. Ashton & Parsons Infant Teething Powders offer a traditional homoeopathic approach. These products help soothe discomfort while teeth are coming through, typically between 4 and 24 months of age.

Nappy Rash Care

Nappy rash is extremely common in babies and toddlers. Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment contains dexpanthenol (pro-vitamin B5), which helps protect and repair the skin's natural barrier. It is suitable from birth and can be applied at every nappy change as a preventive measure as well as a treatment.

Dry Skin and Chickenpox

Calamine Cream can help soothe the itching associated with chickenpox, insect bites and minor skin irritation in children. Emollient creams can be used to manage dry or sensitive skin. For chickenpox, keeping nails short and using calamine products can help prevent scratching and reduce the risk of scarring.

Infant Formula and Vitamin Drops

Aptamil infant formula is available for babies from birth, including standard, lactose-free and starter pack options. Abidec Multivitamin Drops provide vitamins A, B, C and D for babies and children, supporting healthy growth and development. The NHS recommends vitamin supplements for children aged 6 months to 5 years.

FAQ

Can I give my baby Calpol and Nurofen together?

You should not routinely give both paracetamol and ibuprofen at the same time unless specifically advised by your GP or pharmacist. If one medicine does not adequately control a fever, your healthcare professional may advise alternating between the two, but this should be done under guidance to avoid accidental overdosing.

When should I take my child to the doctor for a fever?

Seek medical advice if your baby is under 3 months old with a temperature of 38°C or above, if your child is 3–6 months old with a temperature of 39°C or above, if the fever lasts more than 5 days, if your child is unusually drowsy or difficult to wake, or if they show signs of dehydration or develop a non-blanching rash.

Is infant formula the same as breast milk?

Infant formula provides essential nutrients for babies but is not identical to breast milk. The NHS recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months, where possible. Infant formula is a safe alternative when breastfeeding is not possible or is supplemented. Always prepare the formula according to the manufacturer's instructions and use the correct scoop measurement.

At what age can children use adult medicines?

Most adult medicines are not suitable for children. Always use products specifically formulated for children and check the age range on the packaging. As a general guide, children under 16 should not take aspirin, and many adult cold and flu remedies are unsuitable for children under 12. When in doubt, ask our pharmacy team.
