Condoms for Sexual Health
Condoms are one of the most widely used forms of contraception and the only method that protects against both unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV and syphilis. When used correctly and consistently, condoms are a highly effective barrier method of protection.

Important Information
- Always check the expiry date before use - expired condoms are more likely to break
- Use a new condom for each act of intercourse
- Oil-based lubricants (such as petroleum jelly, baby oil or moisturiser) can damage latex condoms. Use water-based or silicone-based lubricants instead
- Store condoms in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and sharp objects
- If a condom breaks or slips off during intercourse, consider emergency contraception and STI testing
- If you or your partner has a latex allergy, latex-free condom options are available

How effective are condoms?
When used correctly every time, male condoms are approximately 98% effective at preventing pregnancy. In typical use (accounting for occasional incorrect use), effectiveness is around 85% to 87%. Using condoms consistently and correctly is the key to maximising their protective benefit.
Can I use condoms with other forms of contraception?
Yes. Condoms can be used alongside hormonal contraception (such as the pill or implant) for additional protection. This provides both pregnancy prevention and STI protection, which hormonal methods alone do not offer.
