What is Soolantra and What Is It Used For?

Soolantra cream is a medication that is commonly used to treat rosacea, a skin condition.

Rosacea, sometimes referred to as adult acne, can cause spots, pustules and redness on the face of affected individuals.

Rosacea is often characterised by redness on the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. This redness is typically caused by an enlargement of the blood vessels on the face. In certain cases, rosacea can also lead to bumps and blemishes on the face.

The active ingredient in Soolantra cream is ivermectin. Ivermectin is effective at decreasing the symptoms of rosacea like redness, swelling and pimples.

While Soolantra cream is mainly used to treat rosacea, in certain cases, it may also be used as a treatment for acne.

Soolantra for Acne

While the medication is currently only approved for treating rosacea, there is some evidence to suggest it could be a viable acne treatment.

A small scale study into ivermectin for treating acne showed some promising results. Topical ivermectin application over 8 to 10 weeks showed “excellent” or “very good” results among treatment groups. However, more exhaustive research is needed before it can be a viable and proven way to treat the condition.

How Does Soolantra Work?

Ivermectin is the active ingredient in Soolantra. This is an anti-inflammatory and anti-parasitic compound. In Soolantra, this is present at a concentration of 1%.

The actual cause of rosacea is unknown, but there seems to be a common feature among patients with the condition. Generally, there are abnormalities with their immune systems, leading to an overproduction of inflammatory mediators.

Additionally, patients with rosacea often have increased numbers of Demodex mites in the afflicted areas. Ivermectin can successfully kill these mites and reduce the inflammation, helping to treat rosacea.

Rozex vs Soolantra

Rozex and Soolantra are both creams that are applied to the affected regions for treating rosacea though they differ in their mode of action.

Soolantra contains the antiparasitic compound ivermectin. Rozex cream however contains a powerful antibiotic called metronidazole.

Soolantra is a more effective option when treating papulopustular rosacea. This is a form of the condition characterised by bumps and spots. During a 16-week treatment programme, patients tend to see fewer blemishes and experience fewer side effects when using Soolantra rather than Rozex.

Customer reviews suggest that Rozex cream may be more effective when treating redness of the skin, a common symptom of rosacea.

Soolantra vs Metronidazole

Metronidazole is the active ingredient in several topical creams used to treat rosacea.

This is typically found in Rozex cream and Metrogel at a concentration of 0.75%. The time taken to see results when using both metronidazole and ivermectin tends to be similar. This can range from a couple of days through to a few weeks. Generally, patients will need to wait at least two weeks before they notice any difference from using both creams.

However, while the results may show in a similar timeframe, Soolantra treatment tends to be longer than metronidazole. Metrogel for instance, is usually used once a day for around nine weeks but can be used for longer. On the other hand, Soolantra may be used once per day for up to four months.

Finacea vs Soolantra

Finacea is another topical cream that people with rosacea use to treat symptoms. The primary difference between Finacea gel and Soolantra cream is the active ingredients they contain. Soolantra contains 1% ivermectin, whereas the active ingredient for Finacea is azelaic acid.

Azelaic acid works by reducing the production and growth of new skin cells where it is applied. It can also kill off harmful bacteria on the face that can exacerbate the symptoms of rosacea.

Ultimately, the acid can reduce the build-up of oils in the sebaceous glands on the face. This reduces the irritation, inflammation and redness associated with rosacea.

Soolantra and Alcohol

There isn’t a clear association between Soolantra cream and alcohol. However, some people find that their rosacea can worsen if they frequently consume alcohol. While more research is needed into the reasons for this, it might help your recovery to moderate your consumption of alcohol whilst you use Soolantra cream.

Soolantra Reviews

Soolantra cream has positive reviews in general. Those that have used the cream to treat their rosacea, typically report an improvement in their symptoms like redness and swelling within a few weeks of starting treatment.

While some people might see results relatively quickly, it might take weeks or even months for others. People report that the skin often gets worse before it starts getting better. However, provided you stick with the prescribed treatment plan, the condition will begin to clear up.

How to Use Soolantra

Soolantra is typically applied once a day during the treatment programme. A pea-sized amount should be applied to the affected skin. You can do this whenever is suitable for you, though you should try to keep the timings consistent wherever possible. To apply Soolantra cream, follow these steps:

  • Using a mild soap, clean your hands before applying the cream
  • Apply Soolantra cream to the affected skin on the face, taking care to avoid the eyes and inside of the mouth
  • Should you accidentally get the cream in these areas, wash them with water straight away
  • Place the cap back on the tube and rinse hands thoroughly with soap and warm water
  • Make sure to store away out of the reach of children

How Long Does it Take for Soolantra to Work?

The amount of time to see progress while using Soolantra cream varies significantly from person to person. Various factors can affect the time for symptoms to improve, mainly the severity of your symptoms.

Patients who have found success with Soolantra cream comment that the skin often gets worse before it gets better, a common occurrence amongst many skin cream treatments. Based on this, it is important to always complete the recommended course of treatment.

While specific time frames vary, typically, it can take up to four weeks to begin seeing progress using Soolantra. This can take longer, though.

If you haven’t seen any improvement after three months of using the medication, you should schedule a conversation with a doctor or pharmacist. They will be able to advise you as to the best course of action and may suggest alternative rosacea treatments.
