What is Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
BV, also known was gardnerella Vaginalis. is one of the most common infections associated with a change in the natural flora (bacteria) inside the vagina. BV is also a common cause of unusual vaginal discharge; it is NOT a sexually transmitted infection (STI), but it can indeed increase your risk of getting an STI such as chlamydia.
The most common symptom of BV is an unusual vaginal discharge that has a strong fishy smell, particulary after sex. You might notice a change in the colour and consistency of your discharge, such as it becoming greyish/white as well as thin and watery. 50% of women with bacterial vaginosis do not have any symptoms at all. BV does not usually cause itching or soreness.
BV most commonly affects women between the ages of 19-60. Most often, BV is confused with thrush, however the main difference is that thrush does not often have a scent and the discharge is most commonly, thick, white and creamy; please note you can have thrush and BV at the same time.
The most commonly prescribed treatment for BV is a week long course of of oral antibiotics, (Metronidazole 400mg tablets) or an antibiotic gel or cream such as Zidoval gel. Zidoval is applied inside the vagina. There are currently no over the counter medicines or homepathic remedies that can cure BV.
How Does Zidoval BV Gel Work
The main ingredient in Zidoval gel is Metronidazole- which is an antibiotic that can be used to treat a variety of infections, it does not excusively treat BV infection. Metronidazole works it's way into bacterial cells, interacting with the DNA inside these bacterial cells and therefore stopping it from replicating multiple times over; by interacting with the DNA in this manner it can cause cell death and therefore getting rid of the bacteria which causes the problem. This anitbiotic is primarily used to kill "anaerobic bacteria" (bacteria that does not need oxygen to grow).
Metronidazole can only ever be obtained via prescription and it is therefore advised that you be wary of any service that may offer an alternatives without prescriptions whom claim that the item contains metronidazole. These services should be reported to the MHRA or specific regulatory body (GPhC/GMC/GDC). Metronidazole can work against parasitic infections however since it is an antibiotic, it cannot be used to treat viral infections (this is the same for all antibiotics).
For complete and good results, it is important to use metronidazole gel (Zidoval) at the same time everyday for the length of the course (5 days). If you stop before the course is finished, even if your symptoms disappear, the chances of the infection coming back are much higher.
