What Is Metronidazole?

Metronidazole tablets are an effective treatment for bacterial vaginosis. Metronidazole – which is sold under a range of brand names in the UK – contains metronidazole as its active ingredient. Belonging to the antibiotics and antiprotozoal classes of medication, metronidazole tablets usually come in 250 mg, 400 mg or 500 mg dosages.

You can also find metronidazole available in liquids or suppositories (a cylindrical form of medication that is inserted into the vagina or anus).

What Is Metronidazole Used For?

Metronidazole tablets are primarily used to treat bacterial vaginosis, but they can also be used for skin infections like rosacea, mouth infections such as dental abscesses and infected gums, and pelvic inflammatory disease.

You are likely to be prescribed metronidazole if you have bacterial vaginosis (BV), a type of vaginal inflammation which is characterised by symptoms such as vaginal discharge and a foul-smelling vaginal odour.

Metronidazole is effective in treating bacterial vaginosis, but it is common for the condition to recur within a year – if your bacterial vaginosis comes back, extended use of metronidazole may be recommended.

How Does Metronidazole Work?

Metronidazole treats bacterial vaginosis and other infections by preventing the growth of bacteria and parasites, eventually killing them. By treating infections in this way, metronidazole can relieve the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis and other bacterial or parasitic infections, preventing complications.

It should be noted that metronidazole will only treat infections caused by bacteria or parasites, and will not help viral infections such as colds or flu.

Metronidazole and Alcohol

It is not recommended to drink alcohol while taking metronidazole. The reason why medical professionals advise against drinking alcohol while taking metronidazole is that it can react badly with alcohol, potentially causing several side effects, including flushing, sickness and an increased heart rate.

There is an interaction between alcohol and metronidazole that can happen when you only drink a small amount of alcohol. This isn’t confined to alcoholic drinks – even consuming cough syrup or mouthwash – which contain alcohol – could result in a bad reaction. Not everyone will experience this interaction, however, large-scale human clinical trials involving alcohol and metronidazole have never been conducted, so doctors can’t say which people are more at risk of having a bad reaction. For this reason, it is best to avoid mixing alcohol with metronidazole.

Can You Take Metronidazole When Pregnant?

It is safe to take metronidazole while you are pregnant. Metronidazole has not been found to affect fertility in women or men, but if you are trying to get pregnant, you should speak to your doctor before taking it.

You can take metronidazole while you are breastfeeding. That’s because metronidazole only passes into the breast milk in small amounts, meaning it is unlikely to give your baby side effects. However, there is the chance that metronidazole could make your breast milk taste metallic, and there have been a few reports of breastfed babies with mothers taking metronidazole having diarrhoea.

Metronidazole vs Amoxicillin

Metronidazole and amoxicillin are both antibiotics but belong to different classes. Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic, while metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic. Metronidazole is mainly used to treat bacterial vaginosis, as well as some skin and mouth conditions. While amoxicillin is also used to treat some skin infections, it can also treat:

Metronidazole vs Doxycycline

Metronidazole and doxycycline are both antibiotics, but these two medications belong to different classes - doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic, and metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic. There are also differences in what the two antibiotics treat. Metronidazole is mainly used to treat bacterial vaginosis, as well as some skin and mouth conditions, while doxycycline is a treatment for STIs like chlamydia and syphilis, as well as:

  • Cholera
  • Typhus
  • Anthrax
  • Respiratory tract infections
  • Rocky Mountain spotted fever

Metronidazole Reviews

Women with bacterial vaginosis have reported that metronidazole tablets helped to eliminate their symptoms such as a bad smell and vaginal discharge. Metronidazole users online have expressed their satisfaction with the antibiotic’s ability to clear their bacterial vaginosis. After completing their course on metronidazole, online reviewers have reported how much better they felt after recovering from bacterial vaginosis, and their renewed energy. Among the side effects reported by users are headache, gas, nausea and a metallic taste in the mouth.

Can You Buy Metronidazole Over the Counter?

You can only buy metronidazole in the UK if you have a prescription. You cannot buy metronidazole over the counter. Before your prescription for metronidazole can be issued, a doctor will assess your suitability for the medication.

You can save time by purchasing metronidazole online at Cloud Pharmacy. You’ll just need to complete a consultation for metronidazole, which involves a short questionnaire. Once your prescription has been issued, we will send your medication in discreet packaging via our next-day delivery service.

Metronidazole Interactions

There are several listed interactions with metronidazole, including acenocoumarol, alcohol, amiodarone, bortezomib, brentuximab vedotin, busulfan, cabazitaxel, capecitabine, cisplatin, disulfiram, docetaxel, eribulin, fluorouracil, fosphenytoin, isoniazid, lamivudine, lithium, nitrofurantoin, paclitaxel, phenobarbital, phenytoin, thalidomide, vinblastine, vincristine, vindesine, vinflunine, vinorelbine and warfarin.

Always consult with your doctor before taking new medication. For more information, please refer to the patient information leaflet.

Metronidazole Dosage

For uncomplicated bacterial vaginosis, a seven-day course of metronidazole 400 mg tablets is typically required for adults; taken twice per day. A longer course may be necessary for more complicated infections.

In most cases, a seven-day course of metronidazole is sufficient to clear bacterial vaginosis effectively. It is important that you complete your course of metronidazole tablets, to prevent the infection from returning.

How Long Does It Take for Metronidazole to Work?

After taking metronidazole tablets, people with bacterial vaginosis and other infections should feel better within a few days. If infections are more complicated and involve serious swelling – such as dental infections, for instance – the medicine should begin to work in a few days, but may take longer to improve your symptoms.

In the case of some other infections, you might only notice improvement after a week of taking metronidazole. If you don’t feel better two to three days after completing your course of metronidazole, speak to your doctor. You should also inform your doctor if you feel worse at any time during your course of metronidazole tablets. It’s important that you continue taking metronidazole tablets until you complete the course, even if you feel better. This will help to prevent the infection from returning.

How to Take Metronidazole

Metronidazole tablets can be taken with or without food. They should be swallowed whole with a drink of water. You should never break, crush or chew metronidazole tablets. If you find metronidazole tablets difficult to swallow, you may prefer to take metronidazole suppositories or liquid.

If you forget a dose of metronidazole tablets, take it immediately when you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the normal time. Don’t take an extra dose to compensate for a forgotten one.

Metronidazole Side Effects

Many people won’t experience any side effects from metronidazole tablets, but there are some common potential side effects such as:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • A furry tongue
  • A metallic taste in the mouth

If you are concerned by any of these side effects, or they don’t go away, there are ways you can help to reduce them. If you are feeling nauseous or sick, try sticking to simple meals and staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Staying hydrated by frequently drinking water can also help during diarrhoea and when you have a metallic taste in your mouth or furry tongue.

Serious side effects from metronidazole are rare and occur in less than one in 1,000 people. You should contact a medical professional or call 999 immediately if you experience:

  • Unexpected infections such as bruising, bleeding gums or mouth ulcers, and unexplained fatigue, as this might indicate a blood problem
  • The whites of your eyes or skin turning yellow, as these signs could indicate liver or gallbladder problems
  • You have blurred or double vision
  • You have bad stomach aches which can be felt in your back, as this may indicate pancreatitis
